Obi-John Commands You!

Hello Kindred Souls, if there are any of you still out there. Retired blogger John Left here, emerging from contented seclusion for ONE TIME and one time ONLY to bring you a Very Important message.

To make it easy for ya, Brother John is going to break the message down into two easy-to-swallow parts:

1.) Election Day is next Tuesday. Don’t even think about not voting. You have to. And I’m not just saying that it’s crucial that you cast your ballot---it is, more than ever before. I’m also ORDERING you to do so. Yes, just like your dad. I’m using the Jedi mind-melding trick. I have been since you started reading this. You will vote next Tuesday. You will. You have no choice. Vote. Vote. Vote! And haul at least two friends to the polls, too. Obi-John commands you!

2.) Friends, these are dire times we’re living in. Back in the day, I used to say that human life is not a partisan issue. It’s still true---truer now, in fact, than ever before, which is why you simply must vote Tuesday. ‘member on Sesame Street when they used to play that game, “One of These Things is Not Like the Other”? Where they’d put two very similar objects side-by-side and you’d have to tell how one differed from the other? Wellp, evidently some of us still find that task to be a challenge, so I’m going to make it easy for you. When you go to mark your ballot next Tuesday (And you will. You will!), just vote for:

Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama
Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama Obama

This way, we’ll have a supergroovycool America and a niftyneatoswell Earth to live in/on, at least for another four years. Got it?

Good. So vote for Obama already! Peace, out.

Dear John,

I just discovered your blog a week ago. I read it all. It’s incredible how I identify myself with your situation. I’m from a far away country, geographically. I’m trying to find a job more than a year ago. Still no results. This is not just about the job thing. When I started to read John Left’s Field I was amazed with a guy that, though the misadventures he always faced the challenges with good-humour. And some things you posted are so true in my life that I feel myself a Gen-Xer (though i'm younger). What I’m trying to say is that the guy I “meet” in the beginning of this blog was a brave one despite the difficulties, and now, where are you? You left the blog with such a sad and tired post that makes me wonder where is John Left? The one that started the blog? I must be gone crazy but I miss that guy… I know that’s not my damn business, but I really needed to write you a few words and i wanna know what’s going on in your life. I understand you had hard times and you have all rights not to continue to expose yourself. This is not a fanatical quest from a nuts fan of yours from the wild blogosphere world. It’s just a far away friend wanting to known some news from her “brother John”. Hoping you write some comment or new post. I’ll be here…

Your “friend”,

Isabel

P.S. Sorry ‘bout my lousy English and soppy letter. I wish I could express more accurately my feelings about your blog/life. (I’m not gifted on words as you are – and that’s a compliment:))
And congratulations for Obama. He was my favourite too.

Isabel, Happy Villian and Company:

First off, thanks for continuing to read my blog. Although now it's pretty much a museum, I still appreciate you taking the time to read it.

Where is John Left? Well, still trying to recover from the death of my father, first of all. Losing a parent has a way of taking the wind out of one's sails. I'm learning to deal with it---but that doesn't make it hurt any less.

As far as continuing my blog? Based on recent events, I don't think that's possible. When I started "John Left's Field", my experience---being educated and un- or under-employed was fairly unique in my neck of the woods. Now, sadly, it has become all too common. Too many folks are finding themselves jobless (Thanks, George W.!). I poked fun at the process, because it was the process I was experiencing; also, to make fun of it helped to relieve the tension of it. Now, too many are having the experiences I had. And there's nothing funny about that.

I am working now---not for Spendorama, which was a hellhole---still in sales, because that's all that was available. My employers and coworkers seem like decent people. The retail experience hasn't changed. But again, it's easier to tolerate that crap when you know what people might be going through. In January, yet again, I shall begin my job quest anew. Without hope & without despair is the mantra du jour.

I'm not saying I won't ever blog again. But right now just feels like a bad time for my patented brand of horse-puckey, y'know? I'm not Nero; I'd feel wrong fiddling while Rome burned. I appreciate your interest just the same.

So, Kindred Souls, keep your chins up and keep on plugging. You only lose when you quit. At this point, the only direction we can go is up.

Take care of yourselves and thanks again.

Dear John

It was very nice from you to give us some news. Well, from this side of the Atlantic things aren’t pretty either. I’m still trying to find some job, but no results. The thing is, before the financial crisis spread across the world, my country was already living in a crisis (especially in people’s minds), so there’s nothing new. I can’t recall how I found your blog. It was a very good idea to create it to, let’s say, free yourself from pression. Me and some friends that I met in college, and that live far from me, also created a blog to tell one another how’s going our quest in search of work and our lives. You said that you don’t want, at least for now, to continue blogging, but think about it. To write and “talk” to somebody, not only about the job hunt but the adventure that is living can be good.
Hope that’s everything ok with you.

Isabel
